Lots of news these days on Johnny Manziel. Some of it is fairly accurate, and some of it bears little resemblance to reality. However, we’ve always believed that the best source is Johnny.
Johnny had more to say via Instagram and Twitter over the last few days. He has touched on having a clear mind, shattering misconceptions and being a good person and devoted football player. Johnny mentioned that he hasn’t been “this happy in a long time.”
“I appreciate all the people in my life who’ve reached out during the truly rough patches in ’16.” He added that it’s imperative to “LIVE these words, not just TWEET them” and alluded to some of the less flattering aspects of 2016.
Johnny also reiterated to ESPN’s Ed Werder, on Friday that he’s determined to resume his NFL career.
“I refuse to let my entire life of sports from the age of four be squandered by partying. I just got sick of it … One day I didn’t like what I saw in the mirror and realized I could really help people in the position I’m in.
“I love sports, I love football and when you take something away from yourself you realize it the hard way. The happiness from doing it sober has been ASTRONOMICAL. Beyond my wildest imagination and once that continued other good things started happening in my life and it just clicked.”
Johnny said his next priority is playing quarterback again in the NFL. When asked his immediate goal, Manziel replied: “PLAY FOOTBALL. A pre-season game, anything, I don’t care what it is. Only need one team to believe in me and I’ll do anything to make that a possibility.” The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner has been a free agent for most of the past year, after the Browns mercifully released him in March.
Although it’s not the NFL or affiliated with the NFL, one such opportunity is the new independent Spring League debuting in April. The league has already extended invitations to Johnny and others. Several former standout football talents will also be offered a shot to display their various abilities.
The Spring League debuts in April with four free-agent teams. Training starts April 5 at The Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia. Six games will be played in WV in a three-week time-frame. NFL teams plan to send scouts to games and workouts.
“Our core strategy is to address deficiencies in the current pro football landscape by providing a showcase to experienced NFL players and an instructional platform for younger talent in need of live game repetitions, which are paramount for development,” said Spring League CEO, Brian Woods. No word yet if Johnny plans to participate in the new league.
Meanwhile, it appears Johnny is once again working with QB guru, George Whitfield Jr, whom he credits many achievements in his football career.
Manziel also took a moment to clear up some misconceptions on the signing event he is scheduled to attend at Super Bowl LI in Houston. It was mistakenly or incorrectly reported that there would be a charge for photos, and Manziel said he was unaware of the charge until reading about it in the news. Manzile said he wanted to give back to fans and particularly the Texans who have supported him through the years.
Manziel also shared his predictions for Super Bowl LI, picking New England and Atlanta, and making an appearance at the AFC championships in full Tom Brady/patriots gear.
