Where it All Started

Austin, TX.  The Spring League (SL) has announced earlier today that Johnny Manziel has signed a deal to play in their upcoming games which will take place from March 28 through April 15.

TXLovesJFF disclosed last spring that Johnny received an invitation (see the invitation) to participate in the league shortly after the it was founded in 2017. The league is based in Austin Texas and is described as “an elite developmental league and scouting event for professional football talent” designed to showcase talents for NFL and CFL teams.

“We’re excited to have such a dynamic player in Johnny Manziel taking part in The Spring League. We believe our platform is the ideal forum for Mr. Manziel to enact his NFL comeback.” —Spring League CEO, Brian Woods

The League will feature two double header games, by four teams (East, West, North, South). The NFL has responded favorably to the presentation of talent with 22 NFL teams requesting film, and ten teams sending scouts for last year’s games.

Manziel has been working out diligently in California and has been spotted with NY Giants wide receiver, Odell Beckham Jr., and others. This video by “The Checkdown showcases Manziel’s footwork and dedication to being at the top of his game.

Manziel spent two years in the NFL as a dual threat QB, where he racked up 259 rushing yards, 46 carries, seven passing touchdowns for 1,675 yards. In an interview with ABC on Monday, Manziel owned his past mistakes and mentioned he had struggled with depression and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The talented Texan says he’s sober, taking medication for his condition, and doing a lot better through therapy and with the help of friends and family.

CFL Takes?

Randy Ambrosie, CFL commissioner, spoke briefly on Monday night and was complimentary of Manziel for speaking up about his tribulations. “People talking about their mental health struggles is a good thing. You have to respect somebody who’s got the courage to say, ‘Hey, I’ve had a problem.’ So I’m happy for him that he’s aware of his own challenge and he’s gone public with that challenge.”

Although Ambrosie has given Manziel the go-ahead to play in the CFL, he declined to discuss what was brought up in his meetings with Manziel by saying, “I can’t talk about what Johnny and I talked about. I’m pleased we had a thorough process.” Ambrosie was speaking at a gathering of Blue Bombers season-ticket holders and concluded by saying, “As for what happens to Johnny, I’m going to leave that up to him and Hamilton to work out.”

Many news venues are reporting that (with regards to the CFL) “that ship has sailed,” however this is incorrect.  Manziel can still play in the CFL, and the Hamilton Ti-Cats hold rights to Manziel for the rest of the season.

Additionally, while in the Spring League, Manziel has a golden parachute in case a NFL team offers him a contract, before the April SL games.  Mike Florio reported that Manziel’s agent, Erik Burkhardt mentioned the existence of the clause.

“Football has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. Sometimes you take for granted how much you value something until it’s gone. My goal is to make it back to the NFL and I realize I have to earn that privilege,” —Johnny Manziel

Texas Time Travelin’

The Heisman Trophy winner recently took some time to stop through and visit with his grandfather, Jerry Loggins, of Tyler, Texas. Loggins spoke with KLTV (Be sure to watch the video with Johnny’s Grandpa … he starts at the 2 minute mark) and said, “He is dedicated. He knows what he wants. He was talking that night, and said, ‘Pop, I’m ready to get back into football’ and he is really excited about it.”

Manziel was quoted as saying that “The Spring League has provided me with a great opportunity to play ball again, and ultimately, that is all I want to do. I miss the competition.”
