
Three free agents were signed on Feb 8th, by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, including quarterback Bryant Moniz, and offensive linemen Casey Blaser and Wil Freeman (all from America).
The Ti-Cats now have three QB’s on their current roster after trading for Vernon Adams, (who filled the role of QB at Oregon after Marcus Mariota), and Jermiah Masoli has re-upped.
So, what does this mean for talks with Manziel? As we have published previous, talks can continue up until training camp up until training camp starts on May 16th.
According to the Honolulu Star-Advisor, Ti-Cats head coach, June Jones, has said he is “hopeful of signing quarterback Johnny Manziel. The Tiger-Cats control the CFL rights to the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner. If Manziel joins, Jones said, the plan is to keep all four quarterbacks on the 2018 roster.”
TiCats.ca details that the 29-year-old, 6-0, 205-pound native of Wahiawa, Hawaii Moniz:
- Suited up in 38 career CFL games with the
- Calgary Stampeders (2014-15)
- Saskatchewan Roughriders (2016) as a backup and short-yardage quarterback
- Completed two of four passes for 29 yards and a touchdown
- Made 37 carries for 109 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns
- Was a member of Calgary’s 2014 Grey Cup championship team
Key CFL Schedule Dates
- CFL Free Agency starts on February 13
- CFL Rosters will be reduced to 75 players on April 30
- CFL Draft is May 3
- CFL Rookie Camps start on May 16
- First Game of the 2018 season will take place on June 14th
The 2018 CFL Season will last 21 weeks.
Moniz, who started for three years for the University of Hawaii, expressed his enthusiasm and said, “I’m excited … I’ve been training hard and getting ready for this.” Part of Moniz’s excitement stems from respect for the work that June Jones did while he was head coach at UH.
Although, Jones and Moniz were at UH during different times, they did meet at a football camp, and Moniz said: “We all know what he’s done for UH in his time there. I’m excited, for sure, to be under him and experience what it’s like first hand.”
As the Ti-Cats continue to build their roster, Manziel fans will continue to see what the future has in store for the talented Texan.
