Bridgewater Out for 2017?

We are on the cusp of the 2017 NFL Draft.  Currently there is lots of speculation on who will go first … and there are a lot of Aggies hoping and praying that it is NOT Myles Garrett number one to the Browns.  Time will tell!

The 2014 QB draft class has seen its’ fair share of ups and downs.  ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news on twitter earlier today that the Vikings have just indicated that they will likely not be picking up the 5th year option for Teddy Bridgewater.  The deadline is May 3rd.

This report isn’t particularly shocking, due to Bridgewater’s severe knee dislocation in August 2016 during training camp. According to experts, Bridgewater’s injury is considered one of the worst for football players, and the expected rehabilitation can take up to 19 months.

Meanwhile, Johnny Manziel is doing great and working on a comeback … Blake Bortles is hanging in there with Jacksonville Jaguars, and Marcus Mariotta is doing what he can with the Nashville Titans.

How do fifth-year options work?

Back to Bridgewater … When a player drafter in the first round reaches the end of their third playing year, the team that they were drafted by, (or traded to), must make up their mind by May 3rd if they plan to exercise the fifth-year option, which consists of a one year contract along with a salary equivalent to the average of top salaries, based on draft position.  If a player is released, then the option is invalid.

There are a lot of other items in the fine print worthy of a magnifying glass evaluation.   One major problem with extending the option to Bridgewater is that his injury could be a stumbling block for the Vikings.  If the Vikings give Teddy the option, and he is still too injured to complete, then the Vikings are on the hook for the salary amount specified in his contract, which could be $12 million or more.

So, Minnesota may have to take a wait-and-see attitude.  They shored up their bets by acquiring Sam Bradford after trading their number 14 overall pick to the Eagles, but there is considerable apprehension that Bridgewater way not see action in the NFL due to his devastating injury, despite reports that he is making great strides.

There is a lot of speculation that the Vikings would like to keep Bridgewater on the roster, while he continues recovering.  However, time will tell what the NFL and the Vikings have in store for Teddy.

We wish Teddy lots of luck with his recovery!
