Jerry and the Cowboys Leave the Light on for Johnny

Johnny Manziel has long been a source of fascination for Dallas Cowboys’ owner, Jerry Jones. And speculation about Johnny going to Dallas has been rampant since the 2014 draft.

In direct contradiction of recent news headlines, Jerry elaborates on the phenomenon that is Johnny Manziel: “I haven’t changed my opinion of how exciting a player that he is, how unique a player that he is. And he plays a unique position.”

Jerry was definitely sold on drafting Johnny, but he was dissuaded by his son, Stephen, at the last moment. It is a choice Jerry has reflected on and regretted to some extent over the last two years. But despite the water under the bridge, nothing has changed for Jerry … “I have the same impression when he came out of A&M of what his potential is as a football player.”

In a conversation with Peter King, of MMQB.com, Jones said that he is more interested in Johnny as a person than a football player. But having said that, Tony Romo has an expiration date and that’s where Manziel could come in. Johnny could be the perfect guy to come in behind Tony, provide back up when needed, boost merchandising … and in the meanwhile, Johnny is groomed as the heir apparent.

Jones elaborated Tuesday at the NFL Annual Meeting in Boca Raton, Fla: “We have an old adage in talent evaluation, if you see them do it a couple of times, they can do it.” Despite the stubborn, almost pig-headed, refusal of former Browns coach, Mike Pettine, to successfully utilize him, Manziel has proven that he has the innate skills to make it in the NFL.

In fact, according to Chris Chase, (USA Today) “Johnny Manziel is the greatest deep passer in NFL history –It’s a statistical fact.” Chase goes on to say: “As for the ‘first two passes over 30 yards going for 50+ yard touchdown,’ maybe there is no record for such a stat but, if not, we’re just going to assume Manziel has it and that he will never, ever throw a pass for longer than 30 yards and not have it brought in for a touchdown.” (Well said Chris!)

Jerry Jones still likes Johnny, and we do too! Manziel is an amazing talent, and will undoubtedly see him find his niche and flourish in the NFL.
