Earl Campbell, who is also from East Texas, and also the recipient of a Heisman Trophy, believes Johnny Manziel may identify with his perspective.
Campbell told ESPN that some of his fellow Hall of Famers and Heisman recipients should get together with Manziel “because we’ve been through it all.”
Campbell was a prolific running back with the Houston Oilers from 1978 through 1984. His outstanding single-season performance in 1979 earned him All-Pro, Pro Bowl, and NFL Offensive Player of the Year honors. Campbell led the NFL in rushing for three consecutive years in 1978, 1979, and 1980. He played in five Pro Bowls and finished his career with 9,407 yards and 74 touchdowns rushing along with 806 yards on 121 receptions.
In regards to heavy media scrutiny and rumors in the press about Manziel, Campbell said, “I think at some point, you have to say everybody was that age at one time and we have to get back to what’s important … I would tell him that I used to be 23 years old. At one point I had Texas in the palm of my hand as far as an athlete. At a very young age, my mother said it’s not so important what you do now, it’s what you do over your lifetime.”
“Johnny’s gonna be just like me eventually.”
